I love ceiling fans (except when I have to dust them) but I am beginning to think that the lowest setting is just a placebo. You see it turning so you know you must be cooler but I don't think turning that slow is really doing much of anything...
That reminds me of when I was little and the teacher would turn the lights off in the classroom when it was hot. It made us think it was cooler when it was not.
I think the old fans like the ones you see in the old movies, i.e. Casablanca worked on slow speeds very well. They had much bigger blades, but they did move the air. I remember an aunt that had some in her house and on the patio, believe it or not. Her name was Aunt Lena. She also had a Chinese room that I loved too!
I do think that they move the air some and I guess that helps out the AC so it doesn't have to run as much, but they don't really blow on us on the lowest speed. If we want to feel anything, we have to put it to medium or higher...
