Unrealistic

When we bought the house we are currently living in last year, our mortgage lady offered a year's subscription to a magazine of choice as a gift from her and our realtor. We chose the House Beautiful magazine.

I like to read it but the thing that gets me in all magazines of this type is that the pictures are so staged. They make it seem like in order to complete the design, you have to set a tray of fruit and water on the ottoman at just the right angle...like it is just going to stay there forever.

Ugh, some design shows on TV do it as well and it drives me batty for some reason. Why can't they just do practical designs that people would actually live in and around?

Yes, a little reality would be nice.

I agree.

Not to mention choosing comfortable furniture that you would actually enjoy sitting on.

I totally agree with you on that one. I actually went so far as to set up my living room like that (tray on ottoman, etc), just to see how long it lasted before it got cluttered and lost it's 'magazine' appeal. It lasted four days.

I guess that is why my house will always be a hodge podge of items we have collected on our travels, art from favorite artists and family members, and lots of books.

Some stuff goes together and some stuff doesn't, but at least it looks okay, is practical and doesn't require me to buy all new things everytime I want to change things up a bit.
