It's the only thing I can think. Since we went into heat index land a couple of weeks ago, my yard has been vacated of most birds.
I still have a few gold Finches hanging out at the thistle feeder and drinking out of the birdbath, but otherwise it has been lonely.
For a few days, we have had a break in the weather (the torrential rains I mentioned before), and that seemed to bring back some of the Red Cardinals, and I actually did see the male Eastern Bluebird the other day (but I don't think they are doing the third nest this year). I even noticed on my walk that there is just not much going on in the bird department. Usually the Blue Jays and Red Cardinals are everywhere and if you can't see them, you can hear them all over.
I wonder if they have all gone to cooler climates for a change...do they do that?

That's too bad.
I wish I could "take flight" when it gets to hot! I have noticed the same thing at my house, except for the hummingbird family, they still come no matter how hot it gets. Maybe they have special "air conditioning" from flapping those tiny wings so fast!
It is 101 in Texas. We're fixing to start loosing a person for every bird you've lost. I'm going for a swim in tepid, leaf-laden pool water.

Chicken and Haha- Hopefully they will all return when it cools off some. I think it is a temporary condition.
Everglades- I wish I had even that, the closest water to me is a lake that only country club members can use...nice huh?
They are probably just resting in the shade during the heat of the day. They probably feed at dawn and dusk and save their energy when it's too hot. Or at least that's what I'd do if I was a bird!
I am hoping the crows that have been hanging out will come back so I can post a picture of them....
